Google Offers SEO Starter Advice

In response to the persistent questions about how to get started with SEO, Google has published an SEO starter guide.   The Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide covers around a dozen common areas that webmasters might consider optimizing.  They’ve included illustrations, pitfalls to avoid, and links to other resources that help expand the explanation of the topics

The first piece of advice is to create compelling content around the keywords you want to be found for.  And the content is not for the search engines – it’s intended for people who are looking for content and using search engines to find it. The search engine is the vehicle, but the end user is your visitor.

“Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors discussed here. Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means. Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site’s reputation with both users and Google, and it rarely comes without quality content.”

And you can’t just do it once and forget about your website – you need fresh, unique content.

Write an original piece of research, break an exciting news story, or leverage your unique user base. Other sites may lack the resources or expertise to do these things.

Creating excellent content and making it available in an RSS feed increases your chances of great online visibility.
