Google News launched in September 2002.
What started as an aggregator of news content has gone through some interesting changes in the last 10 years. Not so long ago some media companies were fighting to keep their content out of Google News, yet Google reports that they index articles from more than 50,000 news sources across 72 editions and 30 languages and the results are viewed by about 1 billion unique users a week.
That means more than 4 billion clicks each month that go to media websites. With a “B”.
The Atlantic has an excellent article about Google News over the past ten years. It’s a fascinating read for any PR person who aims to get content into Google News.
