We are visual creatures. Our brain responds to images much faster than to text – a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Research shows that when you have text and images on a screen, retention of the message is increased by 42%.

We also know that posts with images on sites like Facebook and Twitter are getting way more response.

How to take a great photograph

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to create compelling images. Most of us now have a decent camera right on our mobile phones and tablets – one that is perfectly capable of taking a great shot. And if you’re not satisfied with the camera in your phone, check the app stores – there are several excellent camera apps available.

The Art of iPhone Photography is an excellent book to get you thinking about new ways to use your phone to take amazing pictures.

Smartphone Photography Tips

  1. Learn about the Rule of Thirds and use it to frame and compose every shot you take.
  2. Take the time to learn how your phone camera works and when it’s wise to use manual settings instead of the auto function.
  3. Learn how to place the subject in the best possible light, so you get the best results. Make sure the sun, or the light source, is behind the lens shining directly onto the subject.
  4. Keep the camera very still when shooting. Hold your arms close to your body for more stability, or use a tripod.
  5. Use a tool like Adobe Lightroom to edit the images. It’s available for iOS, Android and Windows phones.
  6. PicMonkey is another great tool for editing and adding overlays and text on images to make interesting Facebook or Instagram posts. There is a free version and the paid version with all the tools is only $4.99 a month.
  7. There are many interesting photo apps in the Play and App stores.
