History of Photography – Rise of Mobile and Photo Apps

November 22, 2012 by Sally Falkow

This infographic was produced by Overgram, a very cool tool that allows you to add text to your images.  It’s the free version of Over, which is available in the Apple app store for 99c.

Adding text to your images easily makes it possible to improve the images you add to your news and social content. Take a look at the infographic and the rapid rise of mobile photography. Images with content increases views and engagement. The better the image and the message, the better the engagement.

There’s just one drawback – you can only use Overgram if you have an iPhone.  It is not available for Android phones. Since the Q3 figures for smartphones show Android with a 52.5% share of the market and iPhones with 33.4% this doesn’t make good business sense to me.

In an attempt to understand why Overgram would not make their app available for Android phones, I searched for statistics that might support this decision. As a comparable service I looked at Instagram.  I was not able to find exact stats on how many Instagram users are on iPhones or Android, but I did discover that since the addition of the Android version they’ve jumped from 30 million to 80 million users. They added 30 million in the 3 months after they opened the platform to Android.  When they announced the Android app, they had a million downloads in 24 hours and two days later got acquired by Facebook for $1 billion.

There was a backlash from some iPhone folk who saw Instagram as their own little private app.  And perhaps we’d see the same dissatisfaction if Overgram makes their app available to Android users.  But then again they might also see the same leaps in adoption and ROI that Instagram did.   Just a thought…
