
One of the most important activities in doing a social media strategy is listening to the online conversations to determine where the most buzz is about you, your company, your products, your services, your competitors.
Understanding where people are gathering month to month can give insights into consumer trends.
Compete’s figures for May are out and Facebook is still showing rapid growth. It’s now the #3 website, behind Google and Yahoo. The US growth was 8% in May.
But remember that one of the factors for Facebook’s remarkable growth is the international interest in Facebook The top countries on Facebook outside the US last year were the UK, Canada, Australia, Chile and Colombia. The fastest growing were UK, Chile and Colombia.
Twitter’s straight up and vertical graph has slowed. They are up just 1.47%, which still translates to almost 20 million visitors a month. What has increased is the time spent on the site: Nielsen reports that time spent per visitor on Twitter has rocketed by 3712% in the last year.
Video viewing showed a leap in popularity with US internet users. The latest figures show a 16% increase in video viewing, much of it on YouTube.
But it’s not all about growth.
“The better question to ask is who does each site reach–not who is ‘winning.’ What audiences are they drawing and how are they building for the future to maintain the loyalty of their visitors, who to this point have shown little long-term loyalty to any specific platform,” commented Gibs, vice president, online media and agency insights for Nielsen.
