RSS may make sense to techies but web feeds makes sense to users
While I was at the Blog Business Summit last week I took the opportunity to informally survey almost 100 people on their understanding of RSS.
It was an eye opener. I assumed that since they were at a blog conference, thye’d know what RSS is and does – Wrong.
Almost 100% knew that a blog comes with a RSS feed. Exactly what an RSS feed is and what it does was not at all clear to them though.
Very few knew that you could use a feed separate from a blog. And almost none knew you could use feeds on your website.
They responded much better to the name web feeds or news feeds. RSS, Atom or OPML makes their eyes glaze over.

Visit PRESSfeed and get a free news reader and start to use feeds yourself. It’s under downloads in the left nav.
You’ll get addicted fast. And as soon as you see why your web visitors would want a feed you’ll know why you should offer your content in a news feed.
