Social media marketing is the choice of PR and ad execs for 2010.  Yet many companies have been less than successful with their online efforts.

Jeremiah Owyang’s list of companies that got punk’d offers some excellent social  media marketing pitfalls you should avoid.

Many of these pitfalls occur because the company is not listening to their audience.

You can’t go wrong if you really listen, learn what they’re interested in, what they need and want, and then respond. Make that the first action in your social media strategy.

Motrin Moms– Some moms saw the ads as snarky pokes at motherhood.

Take a leaf our Dell’s playbook.  Four years ago they were in Dell Hell. Today they’re often quoted as one of the best examples of how to use social media and PR.
